Choosing Clips by Roof Surface
A clip's only job is to hold each socket straight and tight to the house without damaging it. Which clip does that depends entirely on the surface. Here is how to match clips to gutters, shingles, ridges, tile, metal and the ground.
Clip choice by surface
| Surface | Clip | How it attaches |
|---|---|---|
| Gutter lip | All in One Clip | Hooks over the front lip of the gutter; the other side grips shingle edges. |
| Shingle edge (no gutter) | Shingle Tab | Slides under the bottom edge of the shingle; the tab holds the socket. |
| Roof ridge and peak | C9/C7 Ridge Clip | Straddles the ridge cap so the socket sits upright along the top line. |
| Tile roof, extended fascia | Tile / Extended Fascia Clip | Longer reach for thick tile edges and deep fascia boards. |
| Metal roof, metal gutter, steel fascia | Magnet Clip C7/C9 | Magnetic base holds to steel; no penetration. |
| Ground runs (walks, beds) | C9/C7 8 inch Light Stake | Pushes into soil and holds the socket upright. |
O clips: the piece that holds the socket
An O clip is a small ring clip that snaps around the base of a C9 socket. It keeps the socket from rotating so every bulb points the same direction. On a gutter install, the O clip holds the socket and hooks over the gutter lip; on other surfaces it pairs with the surface clip. Snap O clips onto every socket on the ground, before the run goes up. It is far faster than doing it from a ladder. Commercial kits include O clips for this reason: the C9 1,000' 15" Spacing Commercial Installation Kit ships with 600 O clips alongside 800 bulbs and 200 stakes.
Gutters: all-in-one clips
Most houses have gutters along the eaves, and the gutter lip is the easiest place to hang lights. An all-in-one clip hooks over the front lip. Put the clip on the socket first, then walk the run along the gutter hooking each clip on. Keep the clip at the same spot on every socket so the bulbs line up.
Shingle edges: shingle tabs
Where there is no gutter, such as on rake edges and gable ends, a shingle tab slides under the bottom edge of the shingle along the drip edge. Slide it in gently, do not pry shingles up, and avoid working on shingles in very cold weather when they are brittle.
Ridges and peaks: ridge clips
Outlining the ridge line of a roof requires a clip that sits over the ridge cap. A ridge clip straddles the cap and holds the socket upright. This is roof work, not ladder work: only do it if you can move on the roof safely, and never on a wet, frosty or steep roof without proper fall protection.
Tile roofs and deep fascia
Barrel and flat tile edges are thicker than asphalt shingles, and some houses have deep fascia boards. A tile or extended fascia clip has a longer reach for these edges. Tile can break under a ladder or foot, so set ladders against the gutter or wall, not the tile.
Metal: magnet clips and magnetic spools
Steel roofs, steel gutters and many commercial fascias accept magnets. Magnet clips hold without penetrating, which protects the metal and its finish. Aluminum is not magnetic, so check with a magnet before ordering. For long metal edges, Magnetic Socket Spools 15" put the magnets directly in the wire.

Your socket count equals your clip count. If a roofline has gutters on the eaves and bare shingle on the rakes, count sockets separately by surface and order each clip type to match, plus spares.
Questions installers ask
What is an O clip?
An O clip snaps around the base of a C9 socket and holds it upright on a straight line. It attaches to a gutter lip or accepts a stake, so the bulb points out consistently.
Do I need one clip per bulb?
For a straight, even line, yes: one clip at every socket. Skipping clips lets the wire sag and bulbs tilt between attachment points.
Can I use nails or staples instead of clips?
Fasteners that pierce the wire or roof can damage insulation and roofing. Clips that hold by friction, tension or magnets come off cleanly at takedown.
